Comparisons of Real Estate Appraiser Qualifications

Current Criteria (prior to January 1, 2015)


Appraiser Assistants
Education: 150 hours of approved qualifying courses

Experience: none

Exam: none required for an Appraiser Assistant license. However, applicant is eligible to take the exam for the category in which education has been completed.

Licensed Residential Appraiser
Education: 150 hours of approved qualifying courses

Experience: 2000 hours in no less than 24 months

Exam: National Uniform Licensing and Certification Examination

Certified Residential Appraiser
Education: 200 hours of approved qualifying courses AND an Associate’s Degree (or higher) or 21 college semester hours in specific courses

Experience: 2500 hours in no less than 24 months

Exam: National Uniform Licensing and Certification Examination

Certified General Appraiser
Education: 300 hours of approved qualifying courses AND a Bachelor’s Degree (or higher) or 30 college semester hours in specific courses

Experience: 3000 hours in no less than 30 months

Exam: National Uniform Licensing and Certification Examination

 

 

 

 


Criteria Effective January 1, 2015


Appraiser Assistants
Education: NEW – 150 hours of approved qualifying courses* AND completion of an approved Supervisor/Trainee course
*Qualifying education must be completed within the five year period prior to the date of application

Experience: (No Change) – none

Exam: none required for an Appraiser Assistant license. NEW – Applicant is not eligible to take the exam for the category in which education has been completed until they meet the experience requirement for that category.

Licensed Residential Appraiser
Education: NEW – 150 hours of approved qualifying courses AND an Associate’s degree or higher (in any field) or 30 semester credit hours from an accredited college, junior college, community college, or university.

Experience: (No Change) – 2000 hours in no less than 24 months

Exam: (No Change) – National Uniform Licensing and Certification Examination

Certified Residential Appraiser
Education: 200 hours of approved qualifying courses AND a Bachelor’s Degree (or higher) in any field

Experience: (No Change) – 2500 hours in no less than 24 months

Exam: (No Change) – National Uniform Licensing and Certification Examination

Certified General Appraiser
Education: 300 hours of approved qualifying courses AND a Bachelor’s Degree (or higher) in any field
